Australians recognise 25 April as a day of national remembrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held across the nation at dawn – the time of the original landing, while later in the day, former servicemen and servicewomen meet to take part in marches through the country’s major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal, and are held at war memorials around the country. In these ways, Anzac Day is a time at which Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war.
If you would like to experience an important piece of Australian culture, take part in an Anzac Day service on Sunday. We have created a list of services that are happening around the Sunshine Coast this Anzac Day.
Dawn Service As the name suggests, the Dawn Service begins just before dawn, with the sun rising as it draws to a close. The timing is likely based on the fact that the ill-fated landing on the Gallipoli peninsula began at dawn. Steeped in tradition and protocol, the Dawn Service is particularly poignant, featuring the laying of wreaths, sounding of the Last Post and observance of a minutes silence. Join us to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australian service people in every war and conflict since World War I.
